Do Referral Codes Expire?

Referral codes do not all follow the same clock. A code may expire, a campaign may end, or your time to qualify may run out even while the invite still appears to work. Here is how to tell the difference and check an offer before you sign up.

The short answer

Yes, referral codes can expire—but not every code does. Some remain active while the referrer keeps an eligible account. Others have a fixed expiry date, are limited to a promotion or stop working after a certain number of uses.

The code is only one part of the offer. A provider can keep the code active while changing the reward, ending a bonus campaign or starting a separate deadline for the new customer to complete the qualifying steps. That is why seeing “code accepted” is useful, but it is not final confirmation that a particular reward will be paid.

Before joining, compare the offer with the provider's current terms and look at when the listing was last checked. ReferralMate's referral code directory shows current listings and verification details to make that check easier.

Useful rule: treat the code, campaign, qualifying period and reward as four separate things. Check the deadline for each one that applies.

What exactly can expire?

“Referral offer expired” can describe several different events. Knowing which clock has run out determines whether you can use another code, still finish the requirements or need to contact support.

The code or invite link

A provider may give an invite a fixed lifetime, replace it when a campaign changes or deactivate it when the referrer's account closes.

The promotional campaign

The same code may continue to exist after the advertised reward changes or the promotion ends. A working code does not guarantee the old bonus.

The qualifying window

You may need to make a purchase, deposit funds, activate a service or complete another step within a set number of days after signup.

The earned reward

Account credits, vouchers, points or bonuses can have their own redemption or inactivity deadline after they are issued.

For example, a referral code could be valid for a year, while the advertised $50 campaign runs only this month. If you join during the campaign, you might then have 30 days to complete a qualifying purchase. After the reward arrives, a voucher could have another redemption date. Those are four separate deadlines attached to one referral journey.

Why a referral code can stop working

Expiry is only one explanation for a rejected code. A current offer can also fail because the user, product or signup path does not meet the rules. Separating an invalid code from an ineligible signup can save time when you contact support.

The campaign ended

The provider stopped the offer or replaced it with different reward terms.

The referrer's account changed

Their account may have closed, become ineligible or received a new invite link.

The code reached a limit

Some campaigns cap total uses, rewards per referrer or the number of eligible participants.

You are not eligible

A valid code can be rejected for an existing account, excluded plan, location or previous promotion.

The link did not track

Changing browser, device or app can interrupt referral attribution even when the campaign is live.

Another promotion took over

Entering a second code or following another marketing link can replace the original referral.

The terms changed

Providers can alter reward values, deadlines and qualifying actions while leaving the referral program available.

There is a temporary error

An app or checkout problem can make a current code appear invalid, so one failed attempt is not proof of expiry.

Existing-customer rules are a particularly common cause of rejection. Read our guide to whether existing customers can use referral codes before assuming the invite itself has expired.

How to check if a referral code is still valid

There is no universal code checker. The most reliable process is to compare the listing, the provider's current offer and what appears during signup before you complete a paid or irreversible action.

  1. 1

Open the provider's current referral page

Start with the provider's website, app or help centre. Look for offer dates, eligible products, new-customer rules and required actions.

  2. 2

    Compare the exact reward

Match the amount and reward type shown by the provider with the listing you found. An old post may use a live code but describe a superseded bonus.

  3. 3

    Check the link destination

A legitimate invite should lead to the provider's official domain or app. Stop if it redirects somewhere unrelated or asks you to pay the person sharing it.

  4. 4

    Look for confirmation before committing

Where available, check that the code is accepted or the referral is visible before making a deposit, purchase or irreversible account change.

  5. 5

Save the terms you relied on

Take a screenshot or PDF showing the date, reward, qualifying steps and deadline. This gives support something specific to review if the bonus is disputed.

Checking validity should never require sending identity documents, passwords or security codes to the person who shared the referral. If the link or request feels suspicious, use our guide to referral code safety in Australia.

Signs a referral offer may have expired

No single sign proves that an offer is over, but several together are a reason to pause and verify it directly.

  • The provider's referral page no longer mentions the reward
  • The shared post shows an end date that has already passed
  • The link opens a general homepage instead of an invite or offer screen
  • Checkout says the code is invalid, inactive, used or unavailable
  • The reward shown during signup is lower or different from the listing
  • The referrer can no longer see the invite in their account
  • Recent users report the same failure and the provider confirms the campaign ended

A social media post's age is another useful clue. Codes copied into old comments, videos and forum threads may outlive the campaign details written beside them. Check the current terms rather than relying on the post date or a promise that a code “never expires”.

What to do if the code has expired

If you have not signed up, stop before completing the account or purchase. Check the provider's current referral program, then find a recently verified code or compare the public welcome offer. Do not keep entering random codes, because some checkouts replace the original promotion each time.

If you already signed up while the offer appeared to be live, gather the code or invite URL, screenshots of the offer, the date and time you joined, confirmation emails and evidence of any qualifying action. Ask the provider to confirm which campaign terms were attached to your account.

Before signup

Find a current offer and confirm its terms before creating the account.

During signup

Retry once from the official referral path, without stacking another promotion.

After signup

Contact support promptly with the offer details and evidence you saved.

If the problem is that you joined without applying the code, follow the more specific steps in our guide on what to do after forgetting a referral code.

Can an earned referral reward expire?

Yes. Earning a bonus does not always make it permanent. A voucher may have a redemption date, store credit may disappear after a period, and points or cashback can be affected by account-inactivity rules. The deadline may appear in a reward email, app wallet or separate voucher terms rather than the original referral conditions.

ShopBack Australia, for example, currently explains that referred users must complete its referral criteria within 180 days of signup, while its broader terms separately address when cashback can expire after prolonged inactivity. Carma's help centre gives another model: its referral codes expire one year after issue. These examples show why you should look for more than one date.

A quick expiry checklist before you sign up

Use this checklist alongside the provider's current terms. It takes a minute and can prevent most expiry-related surprises.

  • Confirm the code or link belongs to the current referral program
  • Check the campaign end date and exact reward currently advertised
  • Note when signup must be completed
  • Note the deadline for every purchase, deposit or activation step
  • Check whether a second promotion will replace the referral
  • Save a copy of the terms and the successful code screen
  • Check whether the issued credit, voucher or points have another expiry date

The best time to check is before signup

Once an account is created, many providers cannot add or replace referral attribution. Confirm the current offer first, then complete the process in one browser or app session where possible.

Frequently asked questions

No. Some referral codes remain active while the referrer's account stays eligible, while others expire on a fixed date, after a set period or when a campaign ends. Always check the current provider terms rather than assuming a code is permanent.

There is no standard period. A code may last for one campaign, a number of days or years, or for as long as the referrer's account remains active. The promotion and qualifying window can also end before the code itself does.

Yes. Code acceptance may only identify the referrer. The provider can still apply its current campaign terms, assess your eligibility and check whether you complete the qualifying actions before their deadlines.

Usually not. If the provider says the code or campaign has expired, find a current offer rather than repeatedly submitting the old code. Support may help if you signed up while the offer was live and can show that you met the terms.

Not necessarily. Opening a link may set referral tracking, but many programs require account creation and other actions before a deadline. The reward can also change before signup unless the terms explicitly say it is locked in.

If you signed up before the campaign ended, you may still qualify if the terms give you time to complete the remaining steps. Some offers instead require every action before the campaign end date. Save the terms and ask the provider if the timeline is unclear.

Yes. Vouchers, store credit, points and account bonuses may have redemption or inactivity rules. Check the reward email, wallet or account terms and use the reward before its stated expiry date.

ReferralMate records when listings were last verified and links to provider terms where available. Providers can still change offers without notice, so confirm the latest reward and eligibility rules directly before signing up.
