A new user signing up via a valid referral link receives 500 MB of additional free storage on top of the standard 2 GB free tier. For the person sending the invite, the reward depends on their plan: Dropbox Basic accounts earn 500 MB per referral (capped at a maximum of 16 GB), while Dropbox Plus, Family, and Professional accounts earn 1 GB per referral (capped at a maximum of 32 GB).
To prevent fraud, Dropbox requires the referred user to complete four explicit actions before the bonus space is credited to either account: (1) Click the unique referral link to register a new account, (2) Download and install the Dropbox desktop app on their computer, (3) Log into the desktop app for the first time, and (4) Verify their account's email address. Simply signing up on the web or sharing a cloud folder will not trigger the reward tracking.
No, any bonus storage earned through successful referrals is permanently credited to your account and does not carry an expiration date. If you currently have a free Basic account and eventually choose to upgrade to a paid subscription like Dropbox Plus, your referral history automatically updates, recalculating your past successful invites at the higher rate of 1 GB each and raising your lifetime referral cap from 16 GB up to the premium 32 GB maximum allocation.
